Intimate and stylish, this Como hotel—just a five-minutes drive from the galleries and shops of Ubud—draws a chic young clientele. Japanese designer Koichiro Ikebuchi has made each of the 29 private villas into a luxuriant sanctuary: bedrooms are airy and light with pale, stone flooring, lime-washed wood carvings, and delicate ivory-colored linens, while the dramatic bathrooms have freestanding black terrazzo bathtubs and oversized ottomans. Yoga is a focus here; mats are provided in each room, and classes are held in a serene pavilion overlooking the banyan tree-blanketed Tjampuhan valley. The staff organizes activities like the half-day “Free-Wheeling” mountain bike tour, which takes guests to crater rim of Mt. Batur, then downhill through a chain of traditional villages.

Tip: Book way ahead. Uma Ubud is popular and often full, even during the low season.

Room to book: The Shambhala Suite is the property’s most extravagant, with a spacious sitting room and its own infinity plunge pool overlooking the verdant valley below.
