Argentikon
COST: $$$$$
The Argentikon is not a typical unadorned, whitewashed Mediterranean villa. Built by an aristocratic Italian family named Argenti during the Genoese occupation of the island of Chios, the five restored 16th-century buildings ensure guests the same level of privacy that originally drew ministers and royalty. Each of the eight suites is majestically decorated (heavy wood, period furniture, frescoed ceilings, damask curtains), and two suites can be converted into a sprawling apartment, with five bedrooms, three bathrooms, and two living rooms. Throughout, history reigns, with ornate stonework, a timeless rose garden, and a manganos (horse-drawn waterwheel), the oldest in Chios.
