Two hours from Florence, the port town of Livorno is the gateway to Tuscany, the region that counts Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Dante among its native sons. While the intrinsic beauty of the area’s lush vineyards and timeless villages like Arezzo is no secret, a 21st-century current runs through the region. In the Tuscan capital of Florence, designer café and boutique openings overlay the pentimenti of centuries of art. To the west, the university town of Pisa’s recent excavations extend its draw beyond its famous tower, and medieval Colle di Val d’Elsa is now attracting culinary pilgrims.
