What to do, where to stay, and where to eat in Miami

Even after a century of existence, Miami still has the feel of a place that went up last night. From its beginning, the weather, tropical vegetation, and the waters of Biscayne Bay have made the southern Florida hot spot a languid city devoted to pleasure, more Latin American-meets-Caribbean than North American in tone. The only anomaly is the frenzied building, during which many architecturally significant homes and landmarks have been torn down. Still, pockets of Art Deco, Miami Modern (MiMo), and Spanish Revival remain in neighborhoods like Coral Gables, Coconut Grove, and Key Biscayne. The Miami of today, full of sophisticated hotels, restaurants, and museums, may be America’s most modern city: multicultural, unfettered by the historic baggage of other cities, and always up for trying something new.
