"You'll need to rent a car. San Diego, like the rest of southern California, is connected by highways, which makes getting around fairly easy. The main freeway is Interstate 5; it runs north and south parallel to the beach, so most of the time you'll either be heading toward Mexico (south) or Los Angeles (north). Historic Highway 101, the Pacific Coast Highway, is the slower, more scenic route that's parallel to the 5 and goes through the beach towns (note that its Carlsbad stretch is also called Carlsbad Boulevard). Route 78 runs east and west—it'll get you to the Wild Animal Park in Escondido."
